Kennan lived much of his life in the Princeton area, with his Norwegian-born wife—whom he met in Berlin and wed in —where they raised a son and three daughters. He died in Princeton on Ma, at the age of , survived by his wife, Annelise Sorensen Kennan, and their four children.
